Mike is the founder of Sherman, Young & Associates, P.C. and affiliated company Sherman, Young & Leavitt, LLC, registered investment adviser.


By combining years of financial services experience, Mike is uniquely qualified as a financial coach to a diverse client base.  His areas of concentration are taxation and tax planning for individuals, estates, trusts, partnerships and corporations.  Mike has over 30 years of experience providing accounting, review and auditing services for retirement plans, not-for-profit organizations, construction, manufacturing, professional service providers and small businesses.  


Mike started his professional career with the international accounting firm Deloitte & Touche.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in business administration, emphasis in accounting, from the University of Southern California and a Masters of Business Administration from Portland State University.  Prior to becoming an accountant Mike worked in the drug and grocery retail industries in Washington and California.  Mike is the past president of the Oregon City Lions Club and the Gladstone Oak Grove Rotary Club.  Mike is a volunteer speaker for the Oregon State Society of CPAs regarding careers in accounting.


Mike enjoys traveling to foreign countries and working out at the gym and has never lived more than 100 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

R. Greg Young, CPA

Greg graduated cum laude from Oregon State University in 1984 earning a Bachelor of Science in accounting with a minor in computer science.  He graduated from Crescent Valley High School in 1979.


Greg is the managing partner of Sherman, Young & Associates, P.C. where he started as a staff accountant in 1985.  Greg became a Certified Public Accountant in 1987 and a registered investment advisor in 2000.  He was previously employed as an accountant by Hainline and Pope, P.C., Portland, Oregon.  Prior to becoming an accountant, Greg worked as the assistant manager of Kinko's Copies and was also a grocery store clerk.


Greg's clients include over 200 closely held businesses and 1,000 individual clients.


Greg personally manages timber property and multiple rentals.  He has served as a board member of the Redland/Viola Community Planning Organization.  Greg has previously held other volunteer positions including: treasurer of the Milwaukie Rotary Club, chairman of the board of Full Circle Countryside School.  He also volunteers with the Columbia Land Trust.


Greg developed, designed and built his own home and continues to make improvements to his 23 acre timber farm in his spare time.  He is involved in numerous and diverse large and small art projects and considers himself a fair pool player.

Mark Brown, CPA

Mark, a CPA since 1982, owned his own public accounting firm from 1992 until 2005 when he joined Sherman, Young & Associates, P.C.  Focusing on closely-held businesses, Mark has extensive experience in tax and accounting consulting services for a variety of business activities including buy-sell agreements, starting, purchasing or selling a business.  Mark also works with many trusts and estates helping people weave through the special rules that apply to these types of entities.  His wide range of accounting, tax and business consulting experience, in addition to being licensed to assist in the life, disability and long-term care insurance arena, provides a valuable resource in all business and personal financial and tax matters.  Mark was a tax auditor with the Oregon Department of Revenue before becoming a CPA.  Mark is a graduate of Portland State University.  He enjoys playing golf (anytime and open to all invitations), traveling and riding ATVs on the sand dunes with his wife Patty.

Crickett Toole

Cricket joined Sherman, Young & Associates, P.C. in 2008 as a quality control processor for tax season.  She is now with us year-round, providing assistance to the administration and tax processing functions.

Our Staff:

Darleen Walker, CPA

Darleen joined the firm in 1998.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in business from Portland State University.  She splits her professional time between tax preparation, auditing, quality review and controllership services.

Gene Seok, CPA

Gene is fluent in Korean and holds a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from California State University.  Gene has over 15 years of accounting and tax experience as a CPA with small to medium sized businesses in various industries.

Paula Barnes

Paula joined the firm in 1990.  She studied accounting at Ventura Community College.  She has experience in preparing many different types of tax returns including individual, corporate, partnership, trust and exempt organizations.  She also prepares client payrolls, including check calculations, payroll report preparation and quarterly and yearly government filings.
